The students in the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam are working on the theme Circular Placemaking After Dark in semester 1 of the 2023-2024 academic year. Read below what issue they are coming up with innovative solutions for together with various stakeholders.
” Extinction Rebellion blocking the A12 versus the BBB as the largest party in the Senate! One thing is for sure our living environment, our climate is hot topic! The travel and tourism industry has only recently become aware of the social and environmental impacts on the viability of the industry. For example, the positive economic effects of visitors are increasingly being weighed against the negative externalities of greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption and the social, economic and ecological degradation of local ecosystems.
The Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam is located in Rotterdam South, in an area that is working hard to receive more visitors in places such as the theater, Rotterdam Ahoy and in the park through festivals. At the same time, it is an area with a lot of social challenges. For example, after sunset there are a lot of problems in and around the Zuidplein metro station that cause unpleasant and sometimes negative safety perceptions. This semester you will be working on the Circular Placemaking After Dark challenge.Together with your fellow students and stakeholders, you will search for circular and sustainable concepts that improve the perception of safety around one of the largest public transport hubs in Rotterdam. Think for example about the role that light can play or the role that theater could play!”
Rabobank Zuid-Holland is involved as one of the stakeholders in the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam and is making budget available to take the innovations conceived within the lab further.
