Participation in Bospolder-Tussendijken

Author

Bo Vuik

Last semester, four students graduated from the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam. Bo Vuik, a communication student, was one of the graduates. Her research focused on the following question: “With which communication strategy can the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam activate the residents of Bospolder-Tussendijken to participate in a new location of the living lab in the future?”

Her research addressed the following four sub-questions:

  • What is known in the literature about communication aimed at activating residents to participate?
  • What communication strategy does the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam currently employ to activate residents of Rotterdam-Zuid to participate in lab-related issues?
  • What are the desires and needs of the residents of Bospolder-Tussendijken regarding participation?
  • What are the success factors in communication to activate the residents of Bospolder-Tussendijken in similar initiatives?

Through a literature review, content analysis, interviews, and surveys, Bo answered the above questions and provided recommendations in the form of campaign materials. It is clear that if a second location of the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Rotterdam were to be established in Bospolder-Tussendijken, values such as personal and proximity would be essential.
